What is the purpose of your organization?

  • Why do we exist and where are we heading to? This is the important communication in an organization and clarifies the purpose of the organization.
  • The “why?” is the raison d’être – the general assignment the organisation has set itself. The “why?” gives both the reason to be – and to move from here into a preferred future.
  • The “whereto?” defines the direction of the organization, which may be understood as the big picture of the preferred future.
  • In order to live up to its purpose the organization then determines the appropriate tasks and the apt operating system that is supporting the fulfillment of tasks. Just as inappropriate tasks or operating systems will prevent the organization from fulfilling its purpose.
  • Accordingly the purpose of a role clarifies its “why?” (=the raison d’être) and “whereto?” (= the direction). In order to make sense for the entire organization it is well understood that the purpose of each and every specific role must contribute to the organizations purpose.
  • In order to make sense to the organization it is also well understood, that the purposes of interrelated and collaborating roles must be coordinated and aligned. (e.g. internal supplier/customer relationship or purchasing/production relationship or finance/purchasing relationship).
