- In order to support the functioning of the organization as a whole the organization needs specially defined functions within the structure. One can say, these functions are like organ-systems of a living being. (This applies to hierarchies as well as to self-organized entities.)
- As functions we understand e.g. purchasing, supply chain, production, maintenance, R&D, sales, marketing, after sales, operations, finance, HR, legal, …
- Each function has to accomplish particular tasks in order to be supportive for the organization as an entity.
- All tasks of a specific function (= the organ-system, e.g. purchasing) are distributed among specific organs of this function, which may sit in different layers of the organization.
- Such an organ can be called: a role. We find roles that are fulfilled by teams as well as roles that are fulfilled by particular people only.
- In order to maintain the full functionality of the interwoven and connected functions of an organization it is core to clarify and align all roles, that are depending on each other or connected to each other – like e.g. in a value-creation process.
